Atrial Fibrillation.

Over the age of 60yrs 5-10% of the population will suffer from AF and over the age of 80yrs up to 20% of people are affected. AF is associated with almost a quarter of all strokes.

Heart Failure

In a series of three special edition podcasts Dr Srinivasan discusses Heart Failure. Heart failure is where the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly and needs treatment to help it work. More than a million people in the UK are living with heart failure.

Symptoms of heart failure include shortness of breath, tiredness and swelling in your ankles or legs. The main treatments for heart failure are healthy lifestyle changes and medicines. Some people may also need a pacemaker or heart surgery.Heart failure is caused by damage to the heart or a problem with the way it works. Common causes include heart disease and high blood pressure.

Syncope and Fainting

In a series of three special edition podcasts Dr Srinivasan discusses Heart Failure.

Syncope is used to describe a loss of consciousness for a short period of time. It can happen when there is a sudden change in the blood flow to the brain. Syncope is usually called fainting or “passing out.”

Syncope is common in the general population; approximately one-third of people have an episode of syncope at some point in their life. However, while some people may faint multiple times, most individuals rarely experience more than one episode in a lifetime.

Dr Srinivasan discusses dizziness and fainting and the options available to mange this.
